How people use the random team generator

A random team generator is a fairness tool: nobody picked the teams, so nobody can be blamed for them. Teachers split a class into project groups, coaches make practice sides, event hosts seat tables, and friends settle who plays with whom. The shuffle here is uniform and the split is as even as the numbers allow: the extra people go to the first teams.

Choose "Number of teams" when you know how many groups you need, or "People per team" when you know how big a group should be; the tool works out the rest. Shuffle again reshuffles everyone with a fresh draw. Copy a single team or all of them in one click.

The share link encodes the names, the settings and the shuffle itself, so opening it shows the same teams. Send it to the group chat and the teams are settled without a screenshot.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what teachers, hosts and streamers ask us most

What if the names do not divide evenly?

The first teams take one extra person each. Twelve names into five teams gives 3, 3, 2, 2, 2. The tool never leaves someone out.

Can I keep two people apart or together?

Not automatically. Shuffle again until the split works, or split the list into two runs and merge by hand. Constraints are on the list for a future version.

Can I name the teams?

Teams are labelled by colour (Team Red, Team Blue) so they are easy to say out loud. Copy the teams and rename them wherever you paste.
